By opeia
after many tries of oddly shaped, too big, too deep, or uncomfortable "women's" backpacks, i finally found a great just right bag.
i love the side bottle pouches - they are mesh and stretchy. where other packs have one size only pouches, these are flexible. in one pouch i have my large (1 liter) sigg bottle and in the other my wee tea thermos (8 oz). both stay put.
the main pocket is just deep enough for my taller items (notebooks and laptop) without being so deep that items get lost in the bottom.
my 15" laptop fits in the computer pocket in its neoprene case snugly, yet still easy to remove. the front of the computer pocket is not padded (the back is padded only because the back of the backpack is padded and the two are contiguous), but since my laptop fits while in its case, this does not bother me.
the front zipper pocket could fit a small verticle style thermal lunch bag. there are small pockets enough for me to keep lotion, sunscreen, pens, a travel pack of tissues, a package of disinfectant wipes, and personal items.
there are buckle straps on the sides that i have used to secure a jacket/sweater, and also use looped through the straps of my lunch bag (since it is not verticle to fit in the pocket) and attach it to the outside front of the bag. they also serve as an added hold on tall water bottles in the exterior pouches.
i got the backpack in white and it is lovely with the two brilliant shades of blue highlighting. it does, of course, get dirty easily. i have not tried to machine wash it.
it feels a little stiff to wear even after about 6 months of use. it is definitely not a slouchy one-arm-it kind of bag.
my major complaint is a *very* potent plastic/perfumy odor upon arrival. leaving it outdoors in the sunshine, wiping it off thoroughly, and repeated febreeze treatments made no dent in the odor which was so strong i could not set it near me at my desk. i also worried about chemical offgassing and voc's. after several months the odor finally died away and it is no longer offensive. i am not sure if that was just this bag (possibly from how/where it was stored?) or if they would all have this issue (something about how it is made).

I got this to replace my previous laptop backpack, a 2003 Firewire model, that had developed an unfortunate problem...but Jansport has a lifetime warranty, and I haven't sent it in to see what they can do about the problem yet, so with any luck, I'll have this one for a work backpack and maybe use the older, roomier one for an overnighter bag.
Anyway, I needed a backpack while I sent in the old one, and I like this manufacturer a lot, so I looked for a newer model, but didn't love what they'd done with the Firewire line, and started checking others out. I found this one and liked the idea of a backpack built for women to carry, and it looked pretty :-)
I received this in very good time (thank you Amazon Prime!) and it really does feel better than my old one! It fits my 13" macbook in a neoprene sleeve (just barely!) and the cord, and I got my folder, a 9x13 sketch diary, and a pen set in the back pocket, and a composition notebook, my journal, my Kindle, and my wallet in the front pocket, along with random pens, pencils, eraser etc. in the front pocket. The "water bottle" pouches were big enough for a can of soda, but there is no way I would have gotten my 32 oz. bottles in either one of them! But I can hook the loop onto one of the straps, so it's okay...and now I have a home for my iPod and cell phone.
Basically, this is not quite big enough for everything I'd have liked to fit in there, but the construction is solid, and some who know me might wonder if ANY backpack will ever be enough to fit everything I want, so...
It's a good, solid-built, and attractive backpack which is comfortable for me to carry across a four-block parking lot and up a few flights of stairs, but I wish the beverage pockets were bigger, and I would have liked a little more space overall. Also bear in mind I compensated by picking up a tote bag that slings across messenger style to carry my lunch, and have since pulled the sketch diary and journal out unless I have a plan to use one of them that day, which loosened space up. (I just tend to want everything I could need in a day close to hand!)

This bag is super cute, durable, and has plenty of space and pockets. Amazon also provided the best price for this product.
